Stump grinding vs. full removal
Choose the outcome your next yard project actually needs.
Last reviewed July 20, 2026
Grinding is the common fit
A grinder reduces the visible stump and some roots below grade. It is usually the less disruptive choice when the goal is lawn restoration, safer mowing or a cleaner landscape bed.
Removal is a different project
Excavating the root ball disturbs more soil and may require heavier equipment. It can make sense where a footing, pool, driveway or other construction needs the root mass gone. Tell providers what will occupy the space next.
Ask about depth and cleanup
A written scope should state approximate grinding depth, responsibility for locating utilities, which surface roots are included and what happens to chips and excess soil.
